27.0 CIVIL WAR: ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF AFGHANISTAN
June 28 1992 Burhanuddin Rabbani: As proposed by the peace plan, Rabbani is a Mujaheddin rebel leader, succeeds to the presidency for a provisional term of four months. Term extended to December 15 1992. Reelected for 18 months in December 1992 as the first President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Term extended in June 28 1994 for six more months.
July 6 1992 - Jan 1 1993 Abdul Sabur Farid: Is appointed Prime Minister by the new president.
Jan 1 1993 - March 8 1993 Prime Minister’s post vacant.
March 8 1993 - June 28 1994 Gulbuddin Hekmatyar: Is appointed PM. Formally sworn in June 18 1993.
1994 Formation of the Taliban: The Taliban movement was formed in Kandahar in 1994 by Islamic students who take a radical, fundamendalist approach to interpreting Islam. From 1994-1996, they consolidate their power in the south and move northwards.
1994 Dostum and Hekmatyar Join Forces for Assault on Kabul: Due to continued in-fighting, Hematyar resigns from the Government and joins forces with the Uzbekh General Abdul Rashid Dostum and launches a major assault on Kabul resulting in the mass destruction of the city.
Nov 1994 - 1995 Arsala Rahmani: Acting Prine Minister.
1995 - June 26 1996 Ahmad Shah Ahmadzi: Acting Prime Minister.
June 26 1996 - Sep 27 1996 Gulbuddin Hekmatyar: Threatened by the growing power of the Taliban, Rabbani sets aside his differences with Hekmatyar who is again appointed Prime Minister.
Sep 27 1996 Taliban Capture Kabul: Afghan President Burhan-ul Din Rabbani, his Chief Military Ahmad Shah Massoud and the Prime Minister Gulbuddin Hekmatyar flee Kabul as Taliban Militia advance.
