26.0 CIVIL WAR / POST-RUSSIAN OCCUPATION
May 1988 Mohammad Hasan Sharq: Appointed Prime Minister by President Najibullah.
19 Feb 1989 - May 6 1990 Soltan Ali Keshtmand: Appointed Prime Minister by President Najibullah.
March 1990 Coup Attempt: Coup attempt by the Defense Minister Shanawaz Tanai nearly succeeds but is put down.
May 27 1990 - April 16 1992 Fazl Haq Khaleqiar: Appointed Prime Minister by President Najibullah.
April 1992 Intensification of the Civil War and the Resignation of Najibullah: After key successes by the Mujaheddin Rebels, the civil war intensifies and Kabul is threatened. General anarchy reigns as the power of the ruling group disintegrates and rival Mujaheddin factions vie for control. The President resigns and goes into hiding in the United Nations compound. The prime minister and government also resign.
April 19 1992 - April 28 1992 Abdul Rahim Natif: Takes over as interim president when predecessor resigns.
April 28 1992 Mujeheddin Rebels Seize Control: Various factions of Mujaheddin Rebels seize control of Kabul and other key cities throughout the country. With the mediation of Pakistan, the rebel groups set up an interin government.
April 28 1992 - June 28 1992 Sibghatullah Mojadidi: In accordance with the Pakistani mediated peace plan, Mojadidi assumes the presidency for a provisional term of 1 month. The post of prime minister is left vacant
