24.0 DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF AFGHANISTAN
Apr 1978 Overthrow of the Government by Coronel Abdul Khadir (coup leader): conspires with Hafizullah Amin (Khalq) and Babrak Karmal (Parcham) other persons of the leftist groups.
27 April 1978-14 Apr 1979 Nur Mohammad Taraki is elected President of the Revolutionary Council, Secretary General of the Peoples Democratic Party of Afghanistan and Prime Minister. Internal strife continues and Taraki allies more closely with USSR. Killed in clash between his and Amin's supporters.
28 Mar 1979-27 Dec 1979 Hafizullah Amin: Appointed Prime Minister by President Taraki.
14 Sep 1979 - Dec 27 1979 Hafizullah Amin: Takes over all government posts after predecessor's death. Tries to broaden alliance with West with overtures to Pakistan and the US. Killed in the Soviet Invasion.
